The fatal shooting of a Minnesota activist by US immigration officers has triggered protests across the United States and deepened tensions between federal authorities and Democratic-led states.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was killed in Minneapolis after being shot by an officer from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The incident happened during a large federal immigration operation ordered by President Donald Trump. Civil liberties and migrant-rights groups say the killing reflects the growing use of force in immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n

Organisers say more than 1,000 rallies are planned under the slogan \u201cICE Out For Good", demanding an end to what they describe as aggressive deployments of ICE officers, mainly in cities run by Democrats.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n The unrest grew further after a separate incident in Portland, Oregon, where a US Border Patrol agent shot and injured a man and a woman during a traffic stop. Together, the two shootings have drawn thousands of people onto the streets in cities including Minneapolis and Portland.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Protests Spread Nationwide<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n Several organisations are coordinating the weekend protests, including the American Civil Liberties Union, MoveOn Civic Action, Voto Latino and Indivisible. Some of these groups also played leading roles in last year\u2019s \u201cNo Kings" protests against President Trump.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Demonstrations have already taken place in Minneapolis, where protesters gathered outside a hotel believed to be housing ICE officers. Activists staged a loud \u201cnoise protest", banging pots and pans, blowing whistles and using megaphones and musical instruments. Others shone powerful lights at the hotel windows.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n State police later declared the gathering an unlawful assembly. According to CNN, at least 30 people were detained and later released.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n What happened In Minneapolis?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n Minneapolis became a flashpoint earlier this week after ICE sent around 2,000 federal officers to the city. The Department of Homeland Security described the operation as the \u201clargest DHS operation ever".<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Minnesota Governor Tim Walz criticised the move, calling it reckless and accusing the federal government of \u201cgovernance by reality TV".<\/p>\n<\/p>\n The situation escalated on Wednesday when an ICE officer shot Renee Good while she was sitting in her car on a residential street.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Conflicting Accounts Of Shooting<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n Good was taking part in a local \u201cneighbourhood patrol", according to her family and community activists. These patrols monitor and record ICE activity in residential areas.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Trump administration officials, including Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, said Good was \u201cimpeding" and \u201cstalking" ICE officers. They claimed the officer fired in self-defence and accused her of trying to ram an officer with her vehicle, calling it an \u201cact of domestic terrorism".<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey rejected those claims. He said video footage contradicted the federal account and dismissed the official version as \u201cgarbage".<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Video recorded by the officer who fired the shots, later identified as Jonathan Ross, appears to show Good remaining calm. She can be heard saying, \u201cThat\u2019s fine, dude, I\u2019m not mad at you" shortly before she drives forward and steers her car away from him. Moments later, the officer opens fire.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Footage also shows the officer staying on his feet and walking after the shooting, challenging President Trump\u2019s later claim on social media that Good had \u201cran over the ICE officer".<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Investigations And Legal Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n With accounts sharply divided, Minnesota state authorities and law enforcement in Hennepin County have launched their own criminal investigation. This inquiry is separate from a federal probe being led by the FBI.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Some senior Trump administration figures, including Vice President JD Vance, have argued that state prosecutors do not have the power to charge a federal officer.
