‘We Don’t Want To Be Americans’: 5 Political Parties Of Greenland Issue Response After Trump’s Threat
Political leaders across Greenland’s parliament on Friday issued a rare joint response to US President Donald Trump’s renewed claims over the Arctic island, asserting that Greenland’s future can only be decided by its own people.
In a statement signed by the leaders of all five parties represented in the Inatsisartut, Greenland’s parliament, the parties rejected any suggestion of US or Danish control.
“We do not want to be Americans, we do not want to be Danes, we want to be Greenlanders," the statement said, underscoring a unified political stance.
The parties also urged Washington to end what they described as a dismissive attitude towards the territory and stressed that decisions about Greenland’s status must rest with its population.
“The future of Greenland must be decided by Greenlanders," they said.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said the United States would act to prevent China or Russia from gaining influence over the island.
“We’re going to do something about Greenland, whether people like it or not," Trump said, warning that failure to act could allow Moscow or Beijing to establish a foothold in the region.
“We’re not going to have Russia or China as a neighbour," he added.
Trump suggested he preferred a negotiated outcome but did not rule out more forceful measures.
“I would like to make a deal the easy way, but if we don’t do it the easy way, we’re going to do it the hard way," he said.
The US president has repeatedly voiced his desire to acquire Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and a member of the NATO alliance.
